Here are some photos from last night’s New York Critics Circle Awards. I haven’t been paying much attention to the critics’ awards this year, but I have noticed that there isn’t really a huge consensus. There are several big races which are “up for grabs” and I’m not even sure how the Oscar nominations are going to be culled down in some of these categories. The NY Critics Circle handed out awards to Da’Vine Joy Randolph (supporting actress, The Holdovers), Christopher Nolan (director, Oppenheimer), Martin Scorsese (best film, Killers of the Flower Moon), Lily Gladstone (best actress, Killers), Charles Melton (supporting actor, May December) and Franz Rogowski (best actor, Passages). As I said, all over the place.
I’m including photos of Da’Vine, Charles Melton, Lily Gladstone and Marty. Are we even sure that Lily is going up for lead actress? Are we about to have another category fraud conversation, because I would have considered her in the supporting category? It’s cool that Melton is getting so much love for May December – his performance was great and I genuinely hope he gets an Oscar nomination. The best director race is probably between Nolan and Scorsese, and I hope Nolan wins everything. Da’Vine should absolutely get nominated for supporting actress too – but I wish Dominic Sessa was getting more attention for that film. It was his first film and he knocked it out of the park!
