Robbins was raised in New York City after being born in West Covina, California. His parents were The Gaslight Cafe manager Gilbert Lee Robbins and pianist Mary Cecelia (née Bledsoe) Robbins. Adele, Gabrielle, and David Robbins, a composer, are Robbins’ two sisters. His upbringing was Catholic.
At an early age, Robbins’ family relocated to Greenwich Village as his father sought a career as a member of the folk singing group The Highwaymen. At the age of twelve, Robbins began acting in plays and joined the drama club at Stuyvesant High School (Class of 1976). He attended SUNY Plattsburgh for two years before moving back to California to enroll in the UCLA Film School, where he eventually earned a Bachelor of Arts in Drama in 1981.
At Theater for the New City, where he spent his adolescent years performing in their Annual Summer Street Theater and also took on the title role in a musical rendition of Antoine de Saint-The Exupéry’s Little Prince, Robbins’ acting career had its start. Robbins created the Actors’ Gang, an experimental theater company in Los Angeles in 1981, together with John Cusack and actor teammates from his college softball team.
After 25 years of songwriting, Robbins finally embarked on a global tour and published the CD Tim Robbins & The Rogues Gallery Band (2010). After the success of his 1992 picture Bob Roberts, he was initially given the opportunity to record an album, but he turned it down because he had “too much respect for the process,” after witnessing his father’s tireless efforts as a musician, and because he thought he had nothing to say at the time.
Two episodes of the HBO series Treme were directed by Robbins. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the series explores the intertwined lives of a group of New Orleanians. In Season 2 (2011) and Season 3, he directed the episodes “Everything I Do Gonh Be Funky” and “Promised Land” (2012). During his time in New Orleans for the Green Lantern movie shoot, Robbins developed an interest in the series. “I enjoyed the rare opportunity to watch Treme with locals.
Due to the absurd representations and misinterpretations of their community, it immediately struck a chord with them as well as with me ” In 2011, he spoke to The Times-Picayune. “They saw that this show was unique in some way. Thank you for that. I adored the actors and the writing. I adored the setting in which it is set. In addition, I saw the entire first season in New Orleans. I then contacted David Simon and offered to direct an episode if he needed on the next year.” He served on the jury for the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival in 2013.
He has an estimated net worth of over $15 million
